Heritage of WNC (Western North Carolina) and WNC Heritage is located at the University of North Carolina Asheville, and represents collections held by various institutions, organizations, and individuals. The collaborative web site originated in several IMLS North Carolina Library Services and Technology grants provided through NC ECHO. The original western North Carolina collaborative included the D.H. Ramsey Library Special Collections at UNCA, the Asheville Art Museum, Asheville-Buncombe County Library, the Asheville Historic Resources Commission, and the YMI Cultural Center. The collaborations have since grown and now represent materia drawn from a broad spectrum of community partners including supporting agencies and centers, such as the Center for Diversity Education at UNCA, History [@] Hand, a private research agency in Asheville focused on Jewish heritage, Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, Biltmore Industries, Inc., Grove Park Inn, Asheville YWCA and a growing list of other entities. The most recent partner is the National Forests of North Carolina, located in Asheville. Holdings from these partnerships are located in the broad genres of material on this web site.
Entry into the web site may use either WNC Heritage or Heritage WNC, Both URL addresses will direct the user to one location. The merger of the two web sites, 'Heritage of WNC' and 'WNC Heritage,' occurred in January of 2007 and represented an effort to bring the work of three North Carolina Library Services and Technology (LSTA) grants together under one web address and consortium. The new site incorporates work begun in what was called the 'Land of the Sky' grant in 1998 ; a Forest History grant in 2000 that included Biltmore Estate, NC State University, and the Forest History Society at Duke University. In 2004 UNCA once again entered into a partnership with the Asheville Art Museum, and the Asheville-Buncombe County Library and the Asheville Historic Resources Commission. The focus of the new partnership was 'Ashevilles Built Environment (ABE),' a body of work that focuses on the architecture and the built environment of western North Carolina, and especially on Asheville, the largest city in western North Carolina.
