About this collection

Photographs constitute the largest genre of material in the Western North Carolina Heritage site. Currently some 5000 photographs of the 150,000 in our repository are available on this site. Many more photographs are found throughout our Special Collections Photo Collections pages. Almost all the available images represent Asheville and western North Carolinas built environment and were created as part of the NC ECHO project called Ashevilles Built Environment (ABE). The the E.M. Ball Collection the Asheville Area Photographic Collection and the East Riverside Collection, are from UNCA. Other collaborating repositories, mainly the Asheville Art Museum, Asheville-Buncombe County Library (Pack Library), Asheville Historic Resources Commission, the YMI, and several other other partners have also contributed. 1500 images have been selected from the holdings of Pack Library (Asheville Buncombe County Library). They are found in the Ashevilles Built Environment (ABE) group. The photographs range in date from approximately 1890 to the present.
